queer YA science fiction webcomic Valley of the Silk Sky

Valley of the Silk Sky page 21 is here, and really, everything’s probably fine. Nothing to worry about. Not even one single thing. See for yourself:

But yes, Queer Comics Expo! It is this very weekend in San Francisco! I am given to understand there will be QUEER COMICS.

It’s at the Cartoon Art Museum, June 20-21, and in addition to several queertoonists and publishers of queer comics, there’ll also be a ton of awesome programming. I’m on three panels: Non-Monosexual Characters in Comics, Panel Transitions: Trans Representation in Comics, and Teaching Queer: LGBTQ Comics in the Classroom.

So! If you’re in SF and you dig queer comics, you should head on over to this thing!

Cheers,

Dylan

It was very difficult not to post this page immediately after (or, indeed, before) I finished it. BUT IT IS HERE NOW:

Speaking of being places, I’ll be at the Queers & Comics Conference in New York this week, May 7-8.

I’m on three panels: May 7 it’s Queer Memoir from 9:00 – 10:45 AM, and Trans/Genderqueer Character Design from 2:15 – 4:00 PM. Then I’ll be signing at the Prism Comics booth from 4:00 – 5:00 PM.

May 8 I’ll be signing from 3:00 – 4:00 PM, then speaking on the Queer Male Identity in Comics panel from 4:15 – 6:00 PM.

On Saturday, May 9, I’ll be at the School of Visual Arts (133-141 W. 21 St., Rm 101C), along with 30-odd other comix folk, to do a big ol’ queer comics reading. The event goes from 1:30 – 3:30.

See you there!

Cheers,

Dylan

Taxonomically Unbound pun webcomic

Taxonomically Unbound pun webcomic

Got two Taxonomically Unbound comics up today, since I apparently didn’t manage to get one posted last week (travel + convention madness are to blame). But they’re up now and you can read them here and here.

They’re also on Tapastic here and here, if that’s your preferred delivery method.

Finally, don’t forget that I’ll be at HavenCon in Austin, TX this weekend! That’s April 4-5 at the Holiday Inn Midtown. Come for queer comics and other LGBTQIA geekery!

Cheers,

Dylan

Coming up this weekend, April 4-5, is HavenCon, and LGBTQIA geek and gaming convention in Austin, TX. I’ll be there with all of my sweet, delicious comics, and will also have a bunch of Northwest Press books at the booth.

You should definitely come check it out!

Politically InQueerect Old Ghosts Cellar

Politically InQueerect: Old Ghosts page 26 is up! I think this definitively answers the question of whether or not Gran makes a special point of winding up Archer. (And if he didn’t react, would she bother?)

Read it here on Tapastic, or here on Studio NDR.

Need to get caught up? The archive of all pages posted to date is here.

Fun/gross historical fact: many old houses in Europe used to have their cesspools in the basement, before the advent of modern plumbing. Gran’s house would be no exception. Maybe THAT’S why Archer doesn’t want to go down there (though it wouldn’t have been in use for over 100 years).

SDCC

In SDCC news, more write-ups of the Trans Panel are trickling in. Here’s one from Bleeding Cool.

Beyond

Beyond Valley of the Silk Sky
In very exciting(for me) Beyond news, I finished my story at last! All 16 pages of the derned thing. My big project post-Old Ghosts is to get started on a new webcomic featuring these Beyond characters, so keep an eye out for that. More news as I get more specifics.

Cheers,

Dylan

Politically InQueerect Old Ghosts 1930s

Page 23 of Politically InQueerect: Old Ghosts is up! Gran has another tale for us, and Archer has a VERY fascinating newspaper. Read it here on Tapastic, or here on Studio NDR.

Need to get caught up? The archive of pages posted to date is here.

Research notes for this page: turns out if you do an image search for 1930s British servants’ uniforms, you get a whole bunch of stills from Downton Abbey. It took awhile to find some references closer to the source.

Also, in the original thumbnails, I had our shifty footman sporting a gangsterrific pencil moustache. But in the course of my costume research, I learned that no self-respecting household at the time would have deigned to allow facial hair on one of the staff. So the final version of him is clean-shaven.

Gran would have been maybe 8 years old at the time of the incident, for those of you tracking chronology.

Quick reminder that SDCC is next week! The Advocate has a post about queer goings on at SDCC, including my panel Breaking Barriers: Transgender Trends in Popular Culture (Thursday, July 24, 5 p.m.-6 p.m., in Room 28DE).

I will otherwise be milling about the Northwest Press table at the Prism Comics booth (#2144 in Hall C). Hope to see you there!

Cheers,

Dylan

Politically InQueerect Old Ghosts Gran

Page 7 of PiQue: Old Ghosts is up! Read it here on Tapastic, or here on Studio NDR. Gran, of course, didn’t REALLY want to talk about ghosts, but if Todd INSISTS ….

Need to get caught up? The archive of posted pages is here.

In further Old Ghosts news, the pencils are DONE. Oh my yes. I still have 10-ish pages to ink and 27-ish pages to color, but the uphill part of the process is finished, which is a huge relief to me. I’ve only been working on this story since 2003. (Yep. Two-thousand-effing-three.)

So! Emerald City Comic Con. I will be there, at the Northwest Press booth (#912). Come get your copies of Transposes and/or QU33R signed. Purchase original art from either of these. Eyeball the printouts I made of Old Ghosts pages in their sort-of current state, if you want to peep the story faster than a page a week. All of these things and more are to be had in Seattle this weekend, March 28-30, 2014. See you there!

Cheers,

Dylan

Politically InQueerect Dee

Gosh, so much stuff this week.

Let’s begin with this week’s Politically InQueerect offering on Tapastic, in which we buck the stereotype of the lesbian jock, and catch up with a few non-sporty Sapphics. This was originally an Outfield cartoon with a cameo from Dee, which I’ve recolored for this incarnation. I also had to change the text rather extensively to make it work in the context of an official PiQue comic. So even if you’ve read this particular Outfield cartoon before, you might want to give it a look.

The Dark Crystal: Crystal Power Brand Vanishing Cream

Next up is the brand-new cartoon I made for the most recent issue of Rocksalt. Even if you read said issue you might have missed my cartoon, as it was cleverly disguised as an ad (THAT’S WHAT YOU GET FOR NOT READING THE ADS). Here it is all comic-sized and in sepia color.

This one posits what sort of beauty regimen a Skeksis might get up to (yes, Skeksis as in The Dark Crystal). I spent way too much time researching old-timey vanishing cream ads in the making of this one. Although, important point! This is actually intended as a modern ad done up in an old-timey style, as is the current trend with products marketed to hipsters.

Welcome to Night Vale fan art: spider wolf

Third piece of new art is this Welcome to Nightvale fan art I did. A recent episode had Cecil rattling off a list of horrible monstrosities, of which spider wolves were but one. I was instantly captivated by the concept of a spider wolf, and was unable to resist the urge to draw one. (Note: this has my Feeping Creatures watermark on it, coz I’m too lazy to make a separate image for studiondr.com. I expect you’ll manage.)

Lastly but not leastly, SPX is upon us. I leave tomorrow! The show is this weekend, Sept. 14-15 in Bethesda, MD. Once again, I’ll be tabling with Northwest Press. You can find us at K10. My pal Tony Breed made this awesome chart of LGBTQ comics and creators at SPX. Use it! I’ll also be on the “Queering the Mainstream” panel on Sunday the 15th, from 3:30-4:30 PM. Please come watch us yammer on about things and stuff.

Is that everything? Jeebus, I hope so.

Cheers,

Dylan

Head on over to Tapastic.com to read this week’s remastered Politically InQueerect. SHOCKING REVELATIONS in this exciting conclusion to our family visit melodrama! Strife! Disagreement! Sarcastic remarks! NO ONE WILL EVER BE THE SAME.

Next week I shall have for you a brang new Politically InQueerect comic, which will introduce us to two new characters, Sunita and Yuki.

Rocksalt Magazine LogoBut you don’t have to wait all the way until next week for a new comic from me, oh no! For the latest issue of Rocksalt was released this week, and I have an all-new comic featured within. I’ll put said comic up on the site here in a couple of weeks, but for now you can read it in the online version of Rocksalt, or if you’re in Austin (or a certain level of Kickstarter backer from the recent campaign!) you can peep it in the print version of the paper.

Tomorrow I’m off to Providence for NecronomiCon, a Lovecraft-themed convention at which I will be selling my Feeping Creatures itemries. If you’re in the area, you should come! I expect hijinx shall ensue.

Politically InQueerect Dee

A pregnant pause pervades the penultimate page of our PiQue parable, now up on Tapastic.

Speaking of PiQue, I noticed someone came here from googling “politically inqueerect archer and todd go to england.” When I redesigned this website last year I took that story down since there were no actual finished pages up, just color tests and storyboards. I do plan to start working on it again, though, and will start posting it again once I have final artwork to show.

I’ve also updated my con schedule for pretty much the rest of the year (there are one or two more potential happenings rattling around, but I’ll wait until they firm up). So yes, I will be at SPX and APE, tabling with Northwest Press, and I have a couple of shows where it’s just me and the feeps. It’s gonna be a busy autumn!

Cheers,

Dylan
