Speaking of Patreon, a couple of things:

I now have page updates set to early access, which means $1+ Patrons get exclusive access to them on Monday. On Thursday, the post goes public. (Note: This doesn’t apply to all the posts I make on Patreon, just finished comic pages. Things like work-in-progress posts will stay behind the paywall.)

That particular post has some additional details about eating habits in the Valley, so check it out if you’re curious.

Even if you don’t pledge, you can still follow creators and see their public posts. So if it’s convenient for you, feel free to follow me on there and get updates that way. The “follow” button is on the left under the total pledge widget.

As for convention news: I got into TCAF! I will have my own table this time around, up on the second floor. I’m very excited to return to Toronto and one of the best indie comics shows in all the land.

I’m working on lining up a couple of local events for February and March, and will post when I have more info.

DiNKy business

DiNK Denver is coming up this weekend (April 8-9, 2017), and I will be there with a pile o’ comics for sale! I’m one of the local artists profiled in this here Westword article.

I will also be on a panel on Sunday April 9 at 2:15 – Cultural Influences of the LGBTQ Community on Indie Art

And. AND. Valley of the Silk Sky is nominated for a DiNKy Award for Best Webcomic!

EVEN MORE EXCITEMENT:

Back in November I was interviewed by American View magazine, a publication of the U.S. Embassy in Japan which seeks to bring American culture to a Japanese audience. Well, that interview is now live! It’s available in both English and Japanese (there’s a button at the top right to switch languages), so you have no excuse not to read it.

Finally, I’m wrapping up a comic I’ve been working on for an upcoming anthology. I got really sick this past month and there was other family stuff going on, so my productivity has been very slow of late. I’m gradually getting back on track, though, so hopefully I’ll have some new stuff to show off soon.

Seeing as it’s been, cough, six months since the last VotSS installment, now might be a good time to rattle the ol’ cup. Valley of the Silk Sky is a project I undertake in my free time, and my free time is determined by how much other work I have to take on to make ends meet.

Valley of the Silk Sky page 52 closes out Chapter 5, and Part One

Next up, I’ll be releasing a digital edition of Part One so you can read it offline. If you are one of my Patrons, this eBook PDF version will be made available for you to download later this week. Otherwise, I’ll have it up for sale on Gumroad for $5.99. (Official release date is March 2.)

The book has also been accepted by ComiXology for their Submit program. So if you’re a ComiXology user, you will be able to buy a Guided View edition of Valley of the Silk Sky Part One, also for $5.99.

I’ll go into the details of the benefits of the eBook edition once it’s available for your purchasing pleasure. TL;DR: the art looks nicer and your $$ helps me keep doing this comics thing.

Okay, yes, but what about Chapter 6? What of Part Two, you ask?

Chapter 6 is in progress right now, though it’s not nearly as far along as I wanted it to be. Unfortunately, personal life stuff intervened (and by “personal life stuff,” I actually mean, “flying out of town twice to two different states in less than a month to visit relatives in hospice”). So it’s one of those situations where there was nothing much to do about it but accept that there was going to be a big delay.

So but I’m penciling now, and am hoping maybe to get Chapter 6 up and running by April. In the interim, I’ll be posting a lot of work-in-progress stuff to my Patreon for $1+ subscribers, and there’s a couple more world-building posts in the pipeline that I’ll be putting up on the Valley of the Silk Sky website.

Anyhow. Check back next week for an announcement about the PDF book!

MEANWHILE, perhaps you’re wondering how chapter 5 is progressing. I am currently in the process of inking, and then it’ll be on to coloring. My goal is to have it ready to go by Feb. 3 (that’s in two weeks), so that’s the tentative start date.

Chapter 5 wraps up Part One. I’m working even now on assembling the digital book for Part One (which so far mostly consists of agonizing over the cover), which I’ll put up on Gumroad for your offline reading pleasure. I also plan to submit VoSS to Comixology, so hopefully they’ll pick it up, but I won’t know anything about that for quite awhile (turnaround on acceptance/rejection is about 3 months, and I won’t even be ready to submit for a couple of weeks).

So! Anyway. That is the Status of Things. Next week I’ll post the Valley of the Silk Sky Year 1 art I did – or you can just pop over to Patreon and look at it right now.

That’ll go up tomorrow, and then I’ll post it here and on the various VoSS feeds once chapter 4 is complete (which shall be VERY SOON INDEED).

I’ve made a public post for this week’s page to show you what sorts of things I typically talk about in the world-building section. Also, when the series goes on break in between chapters, I typically give Patrons a peek at additional finished artwork, concept sketches, and so forth. Valley of the Silk Sky chapter 3 concludes!

So, what of Chapter 4? I’ve got 13 pages penciled, a couple inked, but nothing painted. Things have been enormously busy this summer with travel and conventions and whatnot, and I have a short-turnaround comics project I need to crank out in the next couple of weeks.

I don’t want to start posting pages of Chapter 4 until I have enough done to ensure an unbroken run, so I’m going to take a short break to build up the buffer again.

My goal is to start posting Chapter 4 right around the time the Beyond Anthology has its official release at the end of September. (I have a 16-page VoSS story in there, exclusive to the anthology, so keep an eye out for it.)

In the meantime, I’ll be doing another series of between-chapters world-building posts on the VoSS tumblr, which you can find indexed here.

Valley of the Silk Sky page 28 – the thought plickens

The latest installment features some curious goings on, curious indeed:

“The Swamp” is the colloquial name for Eradu Province, the one directly beneath Muru. Many areas in Eradu are partially submerged, and sewage runoff from the upper provinces often collects there, sometimes fermenting and creating pockets of explosive gas. Fun!

Needless to say, it’s not particularly habitable, and being thrown down a hole to get there does nothing to enhance the experience.

Also, let this be your periodic reminder that eVeRyOnE in this world takes gender-neutral pronouns.

In other VoSS news, I’ve been penciling away on Chapter 4, and am just over halfway through. I’d ideally like to finish penciling by the end of the month, but it may not happen because of Other Projects and Things. Point is, I’m working on it, but the going is slow on account of needing to actually make money?

I guess this is as good a time as any to remind folks that I have a Patreon, and by pledging to it you can help cut down on the amount of Other Projects and Things I have to take on. Just sayin’!
