Politically InQueerect Todd exasperated

Old Ghosts page 2 is up, on Tapastic and here on Studio NDR.

Who WOULDN’T want to sit next to Archer on a plane for seven hours?

Trivia for this page: my grandfather, who smoked for 40 years, gave up the habit only under duress. He would never hesitate to tell you how “those doctors” had “made” him quit smoking, as though the two heart attacks had nothing to do with it. (He lived to be 96.) So I borrowed a bit of that bluster for Archer’s own “you made me quit” narrative.

Need to get caught up? Here’s the archive of all pages posted to date.

Tune in next week for more UNSTOPPABLE EXCITEMENT.

Cheers,

Dylan

Politically InQueerect Archer

Page 1 of the brand new PiQue story “Old Ghosts” is now up on Tapastic, and here at home. Todd, Archer, and Archer’s mother Clara embark on a journey to Shrewsbury, England, to assist Archer’s grandmother in moving to a newer, smaller house. In this case, “newer” simply means “less than 500 years old.” Todd is game. Clara is resigned. Archer … might be about to complain a bit? Nah.

There’s only the one page at the moment, but ultimately this is where you’ll go to read the story in progress. At 36 pages, published one page a week, I’m sure there’ll come a time when you’ll want to review what has come before.

As of right now I have 8 pages completely finished, so that’s two months of updates in the can.

Also of possible interest to you queer comics readers: my publisher, Northwest Press, is having a 20% Off sale right this very now. A great chance to stock up on some excellent queer graphic novels, no?

More PiQue on Tapastic! In which Archer’s mother interrupts bidness for business.

This is the second ever PiQue strip, from back when it was still called Young Republicans in Love. Back before I decided Todd & Archer weren’t so young after all, and also maybe I wanted to write about people besides just Republicans.

I’m not a huge fan of this particular comic, to be honest, but Archer’s mom is a principal character in the big story arc that starts NEXT WEEK (!), so I figured you should meet her first. Even if that first meeting is a wee bit awkward.

SPEAKING OF WHICH. I have five pages completely finished, with a sixth in the works. I’m going to get as many more pages done as I can in the next week, and then I’ll switch back to penciling for a bit. So my expectation is to go into next Wednesday’s debut with at least 2 months of buffer in the can.

Work on Beyond is going to ramp up real soon here. With any luck I’ll have enough of PiQue: Old Ghosts done to keep it going uninterrupted while I switch over to working on Beyond. I’m far enough ahead on pencils and inks that I don’t feel like it should be a problem.

Anyway, that’s what’s what. Tune in next week for the start of Politically InQueerect: Old Ghosts!

Cheers,

Dylan

Politically InQueerect football super bowl

It being Wednesday, it’s time for a new PiQue on Tapastic, naturally. What with some I guess big deal impending sporting event barreling toward us, I figured it was as good a time as any to dust off this ol’ Outfield cartoon. Poor Todd seems to be the only one interested in the big screen over the little one. And it’s shocking, I know, that Archer should show a preference for something he feels he can have some kind of control over.

Politically InQueerect Todd Archer Shrewsbury Tudor architectureMeanwhile, you may wish to know what’s up with the new PiQue story, “Old Ghosts.” Well, I’ll tell you. Finished the pencils for page 25 of 36, and boy did that take forever. Lots of complicated architectural drawings, as per that there thumbnail. So I’m taking a little bit of a break from penciling to get some coloring done. Just finished coloring page 1 last night. And I’ve inked up through page 20, so things are moving right along.

When, you ask, will this story actually start running? I’m going to plow through coloring a few more pages so I have a good buffer before I head back to the pencils. So I’m gonna say right now that Feb 12 is my target start date, though I reserve the right to push that back if necessary. I’d rather start later and go uninterrupted than try to start early and update inconsistently. Ya know?

So that’s where it’s at. NEW STUFF REAL SOON NOW.

Cheers,

Dylan

Politically InQueerect neat freak

The latest Politically InQueerect is up on Tapastic. Dee’s getting settled in, and has a disagreement with Todd over whether or not it’s worth it to live with a neat freak.

Speaking of PiQue, as far as the new 36-page story goes, I’m partway through penciling page 25 (pages 24 and 25 are full of very complicated backgrounds and are taking foreverrrrrr). Inked up through page 18. I think once I finish the pencils for page 25 I’m going to take a wee break from penciling to work on the coloring I haven’t started on yet. I’m still hoping to get this thing running in February (probably not Feb. 1, mind, but at some point before the month is done), so I need to get crackin’ on those colors.

Anti-valentines day card

I also have for you a brand new anti-valentine’s day card. This one is for you smartypants types out there, who might like just a little bit of sentiment, but without the saccharine. Here it is on Tumblr for all your reblogging needs.

I might possibly do one more anti-valentine this year, but it remains to be seen. I have the concept, just possibly not the time. At any rate, there are still all the cards from years past, should you require an antidote for this horrible holiday.

Cheers,

Dylan

Politically InQueerect Dee Arbucks

The latest Politically InQueerect is up on Tapastic. Dee’s back in town, and Todd treats her to lunch at his favorite fast food mashup establishment. Grossness ensues.

I’m partway through the pencils for page 23 of the new PiQue story, “Old Ghosts.” Inked up through page 16. Still need to get started on the coloring, but oh, it’ll happen. I’m mostly concerned with getting the pencils done ASAP, since they’re the most challenging part of the drawing process to get through. Was going to do digital lettering, but it turns out the older pages (which I drew in 2006-2007, I think?) are a slightly different aspect ratio from the new pages, and I can’t get one single font to work across both. Also, my old-style word balloons are NOT font-friendly, so I give up and am hand lettering the whole damn story. This does slow things down a little, but it’ll keep the comic looking consistent despite the long break.

More teasers soon!

Cheers,

Dylan

Politically InQueerect Todd Archer Barry Bonds

This week’s Politically InQueerect on Tapastic is a repurposed Outfield comic from days of yore. Yeah, it’s not the right season for discussing baseball, but I’ll be spending most of the summer running the new, long-form PiQue story I’ve been working furiously on. I’m in the midst of penciling page 20, and have inked up through page 14. Still need to start coloring, but a trip to ye olde art shoppe is required before that can begin.

Anyhow, look for this new story to start running sometime in February (when, exactly, in Feb I have not yet determined. Will depend on how fast the coloring goes). Until then, have a wee teaser image:

Finally, I’m in an art show here in Denver, at the Wazee Union. It’ll be up throughout January 2014, so if you’re in town, stop by to check out artwork by me and a bunch of other local cartoonists. One of the pieces I have up is an original page from Transposes, dontcha know. If you can’t make it to the show, Denver Westword has a nifty photo gallery up from the opening.

Cheers,

Politically InQueerect Archer

Dunno if anyone is around today, trolling the internet for comics to read, but I have posted another remastered Politically InQueerect to Tapastic. So there!

In other PiQue news, it may interest you to learn that, in the last week, I have penciled four new pages for the 36-page “issue #3” I started many years ago and set aside to work on Transposes. Scare quotes on “issue #3” since I’m not at all sure I’d actually publish it as a physical issue, though I might? I haven’t decided yet. Anyway. The story now has a title, “Old Ghosts,” so that’s what I’m gonna call it from now on.

My goal for this story is to start running it a page a week in February, and to be far enough ahead that I can keep it going uninterrupted, even if crazy life stuff happens! Is it possible? Can it be done? We shall find out. But I am super determined to finish this story, because it’s been kicking around forever, and yet I still like it quite a lot. I have 16 pages penciled, 12 inked, and zero colored. We’ll see how much I can get done on it over the next month and change, and then maybe brand new PiQue for you?

Cheers,

Dylan

Politically InQueerect Todd

The latest remastered-in-color Politically InQueerect is up on Tapastic. Sometimes you just should not let others make your travel arrangements for you. Especially when that person is a notorious cheapskate.

I’ve got a stack of new comics projects in the queue, though I’m not exactly certain when what will show up where. My plan is really definitely seriously to finish the long Politically InQueerect story I started long ago. I have 12 out of 36 pages already drawn and inked, they just need to be colored. So my goal is to get crackin’ on that, maybe even later today, and have enough of a head start in the queue that I can keep it running weekly even if I get interrupted for other things.

Those other things mostly being my story for Beyond. Because of deadlines, that’ll have to take top priority once the editors are done editing at it.

ghost librarian and hot gay scientist

If you follow me on Tumblr you may have seen a recent post about a ghost story I just wrote. The script is basically finished now, just needs to marinate for a bit. The character designs have shifted slightly from those in the post, though it’s strictly cosmetic. I decided the story is officially set in 1948, with our ghost protagonist maintaining a 1930s appearance, so I had to tweak the hair and clothing styles to be more period-accurate. That means no sideburns, I’m sorry to say, but it’s made up for by fucking awesome suits.

Anyway, THAT story is next in the queue after PiQue and Beyond, and I’m terribly excited about it, so look for it hopefully in the latter half of 2014.

Cheers,

Dylan
