Valley of the Silk Sky: The Long Run Part Two

Yes indeedy, the time has come. Or will be about to come, depending on what format you’re looking for. But first, about the book:

Part Two collects chapters 6-10 of the story. Right now I’ve only published up through chapter 8 online, so you get to READ AHEAD, you naughty things.

Print: 60 pages, full-color. $15.00.
Digital: 54 pages, full-color. $5.99.

Why is the release date for Amazon right now and the Gumroad release is delayed? Well, simply put, my copies aren’t scheduled to be delivered until the 16th, so that’s when I will have them to distribute. I decided to set the digital release for the same day to keep things kinda sorta consistent.

As far as ComiXology goes, I just yesterday got the notification that it was accepted for their Submit platform, so it’ll probably be a few weeks yet before it’s available there. But if that’s your preferred platform, know that it is indeed coming.

The first convention where the book will be available for purchase is TCAF, as part of their announced list of debut books. Neat!

Valley of the Silk Sky: The Long Run Part Two

Yes indeed, I have finished up the art for chapters 9 and 10, put together a cover, assembled everything in InDesign, and lo, off to the printer it goes.

I just ordered the proof this morning, so the next step (after getting it in my hands and peering at it with my eyeballs) is to check it for errors and then either smash the “publish” button or fix whatever needs fixing and proof it again.

Based on past turnaround times, this has me on track for a TCAF debut. So if you’re gonna be in Toronto for their very fine Comic Arts Festival, you will be able to purchase said volume at that time. If you will NOT be in Toronto, fear not. The book will be available for online order, and I will of course have it at all the other conventions I’m doing this year.

Speaking of conventions, I got off the wait list for STAPLE! (yay!), so looks like I’ll be in Austin in September.

Next show coming up is DiNK here in Denver, just a scant two weeks away. While I won’t have copies of the new VotSS book in time to sell there, I should have a proof you can peruse (unless it turns out looking terrible, in which case no).

Chapter 9 is, of course, already finished. My plan is to start running it in early-to-mid April. I have some minor art corrections I want to do to previous pages before it kicks off.

In the meanwhile, I will indulge in the world-building appendix posts I usually sandwich in between chapters. These posts will just be on the Tumblr site, not here, JSYK.

Also, $1+ subscribers to my Patreon will get to peep some concept art during the break, so if you want in on that, gimme one whole dollar.

Spirit in Action Conference

I’ve just arranged to have a table at the Spirit in Action Conference, a community event for trans folks and their friends and allies, which is being hosted by the Mile Hi Church on Saturday, March 24. The conference is free, so if you’re in the Denver area you should come!

On Friday, March 23 the Mile High Church is hosting Janet Mock, which event is NOT free, but you should come to that, too.

In other VotSS news, I finished painting chapter 9, which means I have a whole entire chapter done before I’ve even finished publishing the current one. TRULY, IT IS A CRISPNESS MIRACLE.

Now I just gotta complete chapter 10 and the cover, and I’ll have all the material ready for The Long Run part 2 book. I’m aiming for a TCAF debut, so let’s see how things go, eh?

Secret Loves of Geeks Dark Horse

The Secret Loves of Geeks is now out from Dark Horse Comics!

The book has been getting a lot of very positive reviews already, so that’s exciting. I honestly can’t keep track of ’em all, but here’s a good comprehensive review/interview from the Nerdist.

Anyway, you can snag it right now from yer local comic shop or bookstore. I also left a couple posters at the Denver Public Library, and it sounded like the librarians were going to make sure they had the book in circulation. So, like, you can hit up yer local library, too. Neat!

Also, there’s the upcoming signing at Mutiny Information Cafe on Feb 21 if you’re in Denver. What time is it happening, you ask? Um. I’m not sure! Ha ha. I’ll have to find out.

I’m gonna do the book news first, since I have some spoilery commentary for today’s Valley of the Silk Sky page.

First up, Secret Loves of Geeks made Barnes & Noble’s Best Comics & Graphic Novels list for February 2018. The book comes out on February 14, so you can pre-order now if you like! I’ll have more info soon about a signing event on Feb 21.

My collected edition of The Outfield got a nice write-up on Outsports, so check that out if you haven’t seen it already.

This one’s from a couple of months ago, but QAT Person #2 got a lovely review from Rob Clough at High-Low. If you want a copy of QAT Person #2, it’s available for sale in my Gumroad store.

So.

Science.

I actually consulted with an IR professional for this page, to make sure the scenario would actually play out as intended. Here is his commentary:

A body immersed into water generally won’t be detectable. A thin film of water is enough to absorb IR. When a hand (or warm body part of your choice) is behind water, the water completely obscures the warm part whether the water is hot or cold.

However, when skin is immersed, the skin takes on the temperature of the water. Pull a hand out of cold water and the hand looks like the water looked liked in IR even if you dry off the hand. Then you can watch the temperature rise back up to body/skin temperature.

So if a body sat in water it might warm up the water, especially if there isn’t much water, but if so the warmup would be diffused through the body of water, and the outer layer of skin would be at a temperature very near that of the water.

So there you have it. SCIENCE.

Valley of the Silk Sky page 77 is up, and it reveals a heretofore hidden aspect of one of the main characters. You will reel, you will groan. Read on, if you dare:

In chapter 9 news, I finished inking and started coloring, and did … something? … to my hands in the process. I don’t know what, exactly.

My best guess is that the brush I was using to paint some of the bits (not my usual brush) has a handle that’s too slender to be ergonomic. So something or other in there got over-exerted from a too-tight grip, and now it hurts to hold a pen/pencil/brush/etc. So I’m going to try resting and stretching and see if that helps.

I don’t know what this will do to the schedule as far as getting the Part Two book put together. It’ll depend on how long it takes to get my hands back in working order. At the moment it’s still feasible to hit the mid-April target for a DiNK debut, but I may end up pushing that back if necessary.

TL;DR: bodies suck and I want to be a cyborg already.

Anyhow, that doesn’t affect the serialization of chapter 8, so see you next week for the next page!

Chapter 8 rumbles along, and page 75 awaits your eyeballs:

Little-known fact: 75 is the sesquipedalian anniversary.

Another little-known (until now!) fact: I have finished the pencils for chapter 9. It’s true! So if you were wondering, “Are you gonna do like last year when you posted one chapter at the beginning of the year and then bupkis?” the answer is “probably not!”

And while a penciled chapter is not the same thing as an inked, painted, scanned, lettered, and formatted-for-web chapter, the pencils are usually the most time-consuming part of the process. Having all the pencils done for the next chapter when the current one has barely started is a darn good sign.

This means I’m still on track to wrap up Part II art by the end of February so I can get the book to the printers in time for a mid-April release. So! Things proceed apace.
