VoSS world-building week

Valley of the Silk Sky LGBTQIA science fiction webcomic

As mentioned previously, in between Valley of the Silk Sky chapters I post world-building info for your nerding-out pleasure over on the VoSS website. I don’t post them here on Studio NDR, as this site is already a cluttered nightmare. It is not necessary to read these to follow the story. But, let me assure you, they are VERY INTERESTING INDEED.

If you are The Sort of Person Who is Into That Kind of Thing, click the link to learn more about the most dangerous living thing in all of Pocalo.

Chapter 2 starts next Wednesday, April 29! (Or Monday, April 27 if you’re a Patron on Patreon.)

Cheers,

Dylan

Valley of the Silk Sky queer YA science fiction webcomic

Yes, indeed. The final page of chapter 1 of The Long Run is here:

Now might be a good time to read the whole thing through in one sitting, yeah? If you want pagination, here’s page 1 on the Tumbs, and on Studio NDR. If you prefer endless scrolling, head over to Tapastic.

Next week is going to consist of a series of informational world-building posts, which I’ll be adding to the VoSS website and indexing there. I won’t be posting them here because there’s enough chaos in these parts already, but I will put up a reminder.

Chapter 2 will start on April 29, 2015.

In other VoSS news, I finished penciling page 28 last night. Gotta keep that buffer shored up!

Oh, and don’t forget to back the Beyond Anthology Kickstarter! JUST OVER A DAY LEFT. Let’s get this thing to 2,345 backers.

Cheers,

Dylan

VoSS page 13 has groggily stumbled out of bed and is now available for your viewing pleasure:

Many of the merchants setting up shop in the markets here are from one of the upper provinces, bringing down goods (especially food items) that are not otherwise easily available in Muru.

I used to do a lot of outdoor art fairs myself, getting up at zero o’clock to set up the EZ-Up tent and all the wares, so I feel for those merchants having to be up so early.

In other VoSS news, you still have just over a week to back the Beyond Anthology Kickstarter! So much queer comic goodness contained within. How can you resist?

Finally, check back on Friday for a new Taxonomically Unbound. The comics, they just keep a-comin’.

Cheers,

Dylan

Coming up this weekend, April 4-5, is HavenCon, and LGBTQIA geek and gaming convention in Austin, TX. I’ll be there with all of my sweet, delicious comics, and will also have a bunch of Northwest Press books at the booth.

You should definitely come check it out!

Cheers,

Emerald City Comic Con is nearly upon us! You can find me at table F-04, in what is turning out to be the Queer Qomics Qlub. I’ve actually lost track of who all the queer comics people are in the F-block, so just, I dunno, bring your bags of money there and and set ’em down.

Politically InQueerect Old Ghosts comic book

What all will I have for you? Well! The hot-off-the-presses print edition of Politically InQueerect: Old Ghosts and Other Stories, the Valley of the Silk Sky chapters 1 & 2 minicomic (which will debut at ECCC), and, of course, copies of Transposes and QU33R. Also, free VoSS bookmarks!

ALSO. Tomorrow night (that’s Thursday, March 26, 2015) I’ll be on the panel at Gay City Arts presents Meet the Author: Drawn To Diversity 2. The link will take you to a Facebook invite with all the deets. The thing goes from 7:00 PM – 8:30 PM, and is being put on by the Gay City Health Project (517 E Pike St, Seattle, Washington 98122).

That’s quite a bit going on, isn’t it. If you want to keep track of the whosits and the whatsits, probably your best bet is to follow me on Twitter: @DylanNDREdwards

queer science fiction webcomic Valley of the Silk Sky

Valley of the Silk Sky page 9 is up, and it contains Dramatic Lighting™. It might be viewed in any one of these places:

In the lower right of the page, you might notice a queer family on their way home for the evening. Queerness is a complete non-issue in Pocalo; this little family raises nary an eyebrow.

While works that deal head-on with homophobia are important, so are works that imagine worlds where that’s not something people have to struggle with.

Also, ICYMI, the VoSS mini for chapters 1 and 2 is at the printer even now. Assuming all goes according to plan (AND WHEN DOES IT NOT AMIRITE), that means the mini will indeed be available at Emerald City Comic Con in Seattle just a couple of weeks (table F-04); also HavenCon in Austin the week after that. So! If you’re impatient and don’t want to wait through the weekly updates to get the first two chapters, you shall be in luck.

And yes, I will make the mini available for purchase online, but I have to make sure I have enough for two back-to-back shows first. ‘K? ‘K.

Cheers,

Dylan

Valley of the Silk Sky Chadsen

VoSS page 8 is here for your viewing pleasure, and features a THRILLING, ACTION-PACKED economic exchange! Where can you read it? Why, here:

Just a wee little reminder that the cultures of the Valley have no specific concept of gender, so everyone’s nonbinary by default, hence the “xe/xer” pronouns.

More VoSS news! The Beyond Anthology Kickstarter is drawing nigh! In just under two weeks you will be able to throw your dollars at this fine tome of queer science fiction and fantasy comics. More details here.

As you may recall, I have a 16-page VoSS story, exclusive to the anthology, featured in Beyond. So prepare yourselves for March 16, yeah?

Final bit of VoSS news: I finished the art for chapter two, which means a couple things: first of all, that gives me 12 weeks of material in the queue (10 pages of comics and two rounds of info posts between chapters). This ALSO means I will almost certainly have the chapter 1 & 2 mini available at ECCC.

Still working on the cover art, and I have to lay everything out and all that jazz, but the hard part is mostly done. So. VoSS MINI IMMINENT.

Cheers,

Dylan

Valley of the Silk Sky Razi

Oh, wow, Valley of the Silk Sky page 7 already, wherein we are treated to an EXCITING, ACTION-PACKED discussion of economics! You may seek these thrills here:

The Valley has very unusual geography, which makes it host to countless microclimates. The resulting epic levels of biodiversity mean there are jillions of rare species around, many of which have desirable properties (especially medical). Actually getting to them, though ….

In further VoSS news, the Kickstarter for the Beyond Anthology is going to gear up in just a couple of weeks! As a reminder, I have a 16-page standalone Valley of the Silk Sky story in there, exclusive to the book.

Queer Pin-up Playing Card deck

And oh, how awesome is THIS. A playing card deck featuring a whole slew of queer comics pin-ups by a bunch of amazing artists! Alison Bechdel, Diane DiMassa, Ed Luce, Elisha Lim, MariNaomi, and others … including ME!

I love card decks and I love playing cards, so this is extra exciting. This is a fundraiser item to help finance the Queers & Comics conference this May in NYC, so not only do you get a bunch of awesome comic art, your money goes to a great cause. You can pick up a deck or three here in the Northwest Press shop.

Cheers,

Dylan

Page 5 of Valley of the Silk Sky is now up! “Welcome to Duvane: You Probably Won’t Get Eaten Here!” Here’s where you can see it:

If you’re here because of the anti-Valentine’s Day cards, I dunno, perhaps you might be interested in my current comics project? Valley of the Silk Sky is a long-form science fiction webcomic where the main cast are basically all queer, some are trans, some are asexual, and some are intersex. All are nonbinary/genderqueer cuz that’s just how the world works. They have adventures and do stuff and don’t really agonize about the LGBTQIAness of it.

VoSS has its own website so I can nerd out about world-building stuff without cluttering up Studio NDR any worse than it already is. But I also post just the comics pages here sans extra nerdity, and also on Tapastic.

ANYWAY. Please come back next week when there’ll be some, like, dialogue and stuff.

Cheers,

Dylan

Valley of the Silk Sky the Long Run Razi

Valley of the Silk Sky: The Long Run page 4 is actually a PSA suggesting that perhaps stopping to smell the flowers is not such a great idea after all.

Point your eyeballs thisaway:

I am in the midst of coloring page 10, which I will probably finish today. Will I be able to knock out the rest of the chapter by next week? Maybe! We shall see.

In a perfect world I’d be able to complete chapter 2 in time to do a little promo book of the first two chapters for ECCC. This is not totally outside the realm of possibility, but it’s probably not worth rushing the art for. The question is, if I don’t get chapter 2 finished, is it worth it to print up a book that’s just chapter 1, or is it better to hold off and just do the 2-chapters book. I’m leaning towards the latter.

In other news, Politically InQueerect: Old Ghosts should be going to press very shortly, so that I should definitely have for ECCC. Woo!

Cheers,

Dylan
